EQUIPMENT CHECKS - Coaches Pay attention to this new rule and the penalty!

4-3 Each head coach shall be responsible for ensuring that each of his/her players is properly equipped. Referees - work with the head coach in preventing obvious violations before the game starts. If you see an obvious violation bring it to the attention of the coach.

Add Penalty: An improperly equipped player shall be instructed to leave the field of play when the ball next ceases to be in play. The head coach shall be cautioned (yellow card) for improperly equipped players. (Note a coach may receive a second caution card and subsequently be disqualified for this infraction - work with the coach and players to try and prevent such an action being necessary.)

Some Q and A's about rule 4.3 (Also check out Frequently Asked Questions - Situation 13, 14, 15, and 16

Basically rule 4.3 tells us if a player is improperly or illegally equipped that the coach will get a caution card. Prior to the start of the game if we notice this we should tell the coach so he or she can get the problem corrected. We can even delay the start of the game to allow this to happen.

So, when does the Coach get the caution and when does the player get the caution? I like the way Jason described it and this should be everyone’s guide.

If the player is on the field with illegal or improper equipment – the Coach is the one who gets the caution card.

If the player is wearing or using the equipment illegally – the Player gets the caution.

It really is that simple. We do expect that our officials will exercise restraint and common sense in the administration of the penalty for this rule. Work with the players and coaches to make sure you do not have to issue a caution card

Eliminated: Rule 5-2-2-d-3 Examine the uniform and equipment of each player to see that it complies with the rules.
